There is no such species as a “seagull,” only gulls of various names that populate shores and parking lots around the world. Then again, the gull in Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull is symbolic. This new production of the great play christens Steppenwolf’s new in-the-round Ensemble Theater. Adapted and directed by Yasen Peyankov, starring three generations of Steppenwolf Ensemble actors, this funny, tragic, lyrical play—written in 1895 and first performed in 1896—is the perfect way to show off this incomparable company. —Laura Jacobs
