Are we talking Surrealism or The Flintstones? For their first exhibition at R & Company, the Lebanese designers Stephanie Sayar and Charbel Garibeh present “Broomlithic.” It’s a word that joins two distinct, seemingly disparate ideas: the broom and the archaeological term that denotes the use of tools made from stone. What do you get when you combine the lowly household object with the Stone Age, a time period that saw early humans living a more settled existence, complete with stone tools? White stone tables, benches, and chairs accented with fibers that resemble the bristles of a broom. These ancient and basic human creations are more than modern—they’re strangely futuristic. —Clara Molot
