In the fall of 1974, the two greatest boxers in the world flew from the United States to Kinshasa, Zaire, to fight for the WBA, WBC, and The Ring heavyweight titles. Muhammad Ali, the challenger, entered the fight with a 44-2 record. Yet against the terrifyingly powerful George Foreman, who had yet to lose a bout, Ali was still a 4-1 underdog. What ensued—The Rumble in the Jungle—is considered by many to be the most enthralling sporting event of the 20th century: Ali won by knockout in front of an estimated 1 billion onlookers (including television audiences). After their battle, Foreman attempted to antagonize Ali into a second fight, but it never came to be. Rumble in the Jungle Rematch, a three-hour-plus stage performance, provides consolation. The show offers a “theatrical retelling” of the heralded event complete with dancers, musicians, and re-enacted sparring. Running through October 29, Rumble in the Jungle Rematch gives audiences a taste of the sequential clash that could have been. —Jack Sullivan
