The artist Rosana Paulino grew up in 1980s Brazil, in a society permeated with injustice. Her multifaceted oeuvre explores “what it means to be a woman, and what it means to be Black in Brazilian society.” She unpacks the perception of the Black female body as an exotic, erotic object. Paulino’s groundbreaking project from 2012, “Assentamento,” pairs her family portraits with archival images of enslaved men and women, re-rooting them in a historical narrative. In her largest-ever exhibition outside of Brazil, works from 1994 to 2024 provide a unique perspective on the legacies of Afro-descendant America. —Elena Clavarino
