Roger Winter was born in Denison, Texas, in 1934. Today, he resides on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Over a lengthy career, Winter made these two locations—rural Texas and bustling New York City—the centerpieces of his work. The first in his family to attend college, Winter arrived at the University of Texas, in Austin, to study art in 1952. Upon graduating he served for two years in the U.S. Army, and then earned his M.F.A. in painting from the University of Iowa. A scholarship to study at the Brooklyn Museum School in New York came next. Over the decades, Winter taught painting while also creating stunning landscapes of the South and geometric abstractions of the lively Northeast. His latest “topographical and tapestry-like” paintings, as Winter’s biographer Susie Kalil describes them, are on view at Tara Downs. —Jack Sullivan
