Rodney Graham: Getting it Together in the Country

Rodney Graham, Betula Pendula Fastigiata (Sous-Chef on Smoke Break), 2011.

Feb 1 – May 8, 2023

“It may be a burden to reinvent oneself every time,” Rodney Graham has said, “but it makes things more interesting.” One thing is for sure, the Canadian artist’s oeuvre is expansive. Graham rose to prominence in the 1970s with site-specific installations and text-based works, then moved on to photography, film, and painting. This exhibition sees lightboxes of his photographs populating two gallery spaces in Somerset. The series, which was completed between 2011 and 2013, is called “The Four Seasons.” Each lightbox features an elaborate mis-en-scène with Graham himself at the center, in costume, finding a moment of stillness or tranquility. Graham is instructing us to take a step back from the grind of urban life. —Elena Clavarino
