Robin Rhode & Nari Ward: Power Wall

Apr 3 – May 16, 2020
407 Pedder Building, 12 Pedder Street, Hong Kong

A wall is not just a vertical surface on which to hang art—it can also be the activation point of a work, or integral to the art itself. That’s what’s happening in this exhibition, which brings together the artists Robin Rhode and Nari Ward. Both are engaged conceptually with “the wall,” and more broadly with socio-political context. While the Jamaican-born, New York-based Rhode says he “simplifies chaos with the means of art”—reducing complex ideas into a single symbol: the repetitive formation of the letter S, for example—the South African-born, Berlin-based Ward renders a universal symbol—here, the raised fist—out of a common object: shoelaces. —J.V.
