Robert Mapplethorpe New York

Sixteen very large limited-edition photographs by the American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe are on view at the Gladstone Gallery. These are important images from his oeuvre—portraits, flowers, nudes—all rendered in the artist’s signature black and white. Mapplethorpe, who died in 1989, found classical lineaments in poses of sexual provocation, and located sculptural properties in evanescence. He experimented with scale. “To make pictures big,” he said, “is to make them more powerful.” Most of these photographs are presented in an imposing 60x60-inch format, a longtime wish of Mapplethorpe’s. —Carolina de Armas
