In 1955, two talented photographers—Robert Frank and Todd Webb—received Guggenheim grants to survey the U.S. Frank embarked on a road trip, capturing the highways and forgotten towns of the Midwest. Webb walked, biked, and boated across the country, capturing what he described as a “vanishing Americana, and the way of life that is taking its place.” It was a time of significant change in America. People were moving to the suburbs, buying cars and televisions, and consumer culture was on the rise. Meanwhile, the Civil Rights movement was in full swing, creating unprecedented turmoil in the racist South. Though the photographers worked on similar projects at the same time, they never crossed paths. Frank’s images, published in the book The Americans, were celebrated; the images Webb gathered remain largely unknown. This exhibition in Houston presents the bounty of those two grants together for the first time. —Elena Clavarino
