While Carl Fabergé made exquisite enamel eggs for Tsar Nicholas II, Louis Cartier was in Paris, having taken the reins of his father’s luxury jewelry company. By the early 20th century, the two houses were rivals, seeking to attract the same clientele—royalty and the rich aristocrats who wanted fabulous adornments for themselves and their homes.
