The plan was to regale Windy City opera fans with a transfer of Rimsky-Korsakov’s bejeweled fairy tale Kashchej the Immortal, fresh from its recent American premiere at Island City Opera in the Bay Area. Ballet fans will recognize the eponymous demon as the paper tiger of Stravinsky’s Firebird, terrorizing an interchangeable harem of enchanted maidens. This time, it’s not a prince with supernatural assistance who gives the demon his comeuppance but (take that!) his very own daughter. Alas, evolving public-health precautions having whisked that promised production off the table. Instead, cast members Will Liverman, Annie Rosen, and Wilbur Paula will perform an hour’s worth of Kashchej excerpts and other goodies with piano accompaniment by Michael Pecak and the company’s buzz-worthy music director Lidiya Yankovskaya. Here’s hoping a post-pandemic rain date will bring us the full-length show with all its bells and whistles. —M.G.
