Richard Wagner: Götterdämmerung

May 26, 2024
Falkenstrasse 1, 8008 Zürich, Switzerland

The Zurich “Ring des Nibelungen,” directed by Andreas Homoki and conducted by Gianandrea Noseda, reaches its final chapter. Klaus Florian Vogt, whose uniquely reedy Heldentenor is an acquired taste, sings Siegfried, the hero of the future undone by the guile of a doomed old guard. As the world-redeeming Valkyrie Brünnhilde, the house has cast Camilla Nylund, a more lyrical soprano than those whom history has enshrined in the pantheon for their interpretations of the part. David Leigh is Hagen, the villain with the big bass voice and the baser character. The autumn performances are stand-alone, but in May, the new production returns in the context of two full “Ring” cycles. If in Zurich, do not miss the dazzling animated Wagner-for-all lightshow on the façade of the Opera House (also impressive on YouTube). —Matthew Gurewitsch
