Raphaël Pichon, very much on the rise, is an early-music specialist from France. Romeo Castellucci, very much at the top, is an experimental theatrical polymath from Italy. The two are now joining forces for a celebration of life enacted to the sacred music of Mozart. The Requiem, arguably the most famous torso in music history, takes pride of place amid some half dozen lesser work known only to the most dogged academics. Pichon’s orchestra and chorus, playing under the collective moniker “Pygmalion,” plus the vocalists Sandrine Piau, Sara Mingardo, Anicio Zorzi Giustiniani, and Luca Tittoto, promise top-drawer musical values. What Castellucci has in mind is anybody’s guess. While his work with light is often transcendental, his penchant for the noisy coup de théâtre can be unfortunate. Pity snoozers at his Don Giovanni in Salzburg last summer, jolted awake by a luxury automobile and a grand piano crashing onstage from the flys. —Matthew Gurewitsch
