Requiem: Verdi's masterpiece interpreted by conductor Teodor Currentzis and filmmaker Jonas Mekas

Nov 19–24, 2019
545 W 30th St, New York, NY 10001, USA

This could be a case of overkill. After all, what visual accompaniment do the theatrics of Verdi’s stupendous Requiem require? Any passable concert rendition delivers the Apocalyptic imagery to the mind’s eye in spades, especially if the performers lay claim to privileged insights. Such is the case with the feverishly touted conductor Teodor Currentzis and his cultlike MusicAeterna Choir and Orchestra, all of them appearing in North America for the first time. Nevertheless, The Shed is presenting these potentially revelatory concerts in tandem with “a new cinematic artwork” by the late Jonas Mekas, advertised as “a meditative tribute to Verdi’s masterpiece and an homage to the filmmaker himself.” (The film will also be screened on its own from November 1 to 10.) —M.G.
