California’s obsession with Rembrandt started in 1938, when J. Paul Getty purchased Portrait of Marten Looten. Eighty years later, the state has slowly grown its Rembrandt collection, and today his work is housed in five different state museums. In collaboration, the Hammer, the Getty, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Norton Simon Museum, and the Timken are coming together for an unprecedented online exhibition. The 14 works on display are some of Rembrandt’s most dynamic, a testament to the prolific artist’s early career in Amsterdam and Leiden. —E.C.
