Reconstructing (Still Working But The Devil Might Be Inside)

How can intimacy exist between different races—and should it—in the context of a violently anti-Black United States? That is the question posed by the TEAM, the Brooklyn-based experimental theater collective behind Reconstructing. Created by a group of 21 artists, age 28 to 98 and largely people of Color, the production confronts the challenge of moving forward together in the wake of American slavery. At its center is a two-story house. From one angle, it appears to have been damaged by a flood. From another, it’s a new construction wrapped in Tyvek. From a third angle, it recalls Tara from Gone With the Wind. Could it also be on fire? Directed by Rachel Chavkin and Zhailon Levingston, Reconstructing interweaves dialogue, music, poetry, and the true story of how this performance piece came together. —Jeanne Malle
