Rebuilding

Josh O’Connor and Lily LaTorre in Rebuilding.

A year after Challengers, Luca Guadagnino’s fast-paced tennis drama, Josh O’Connor returns in Rebuilding with a quieter performance. Directed by Max Walker-Silverman, and also starring Meghann Fahy, the indie film is not just a portrait of O’Connor’s range but of America today. After a wildfire destroys his ranch in southern Colorado, O’Connor’s character relocates to a government-run campsite where he must reckon with who he is and what he has left. “Some people lost everything,” he says. “I still got stuff.” Living in a trailer, he’s ashamed to show his new circumstances to his young daughter and ex-wife, with whom he begins to reconnect. Still, he must find hope. A story of the modern West, Rebuilding is a reflection on love, community, and resilience. —Jeanne Malle
