Salt. Sugar. Clay. River water. Precious metals. Cotton. Each of these colonial-era commodities, raw goods exploited and exported, spelled great wealth for some and immeasurable loss—of land rights, human rights, life—for others. By using these commodities to construct sculptural pieces and installations, ten or so contemporary artists attempt to touch the bodies and souls embedded in these materials. —E.C.
