The late photographer Emile Rakotondrazaka had many aliases. His friends and family called him Dadamily, while his acquaintances settled on the simpler Ramily. Born in 1939 and raised in poverty, he was drawn to photography even as a child, and by 1960 was hired as an assistant at the PhotoFlex studio in one of Antananarivo’s upmarket neighborhoods. By the end of his life, Ramily led Madagascar’s only operational photography studio. He died in 2017. This exhibition sheds light on his important yet little-known practice. —Elena Clavarino
