Rachmaninoff & Muhly

Alexandre Kantorow

Jan 24–26, 2025

The hypnotic, dark Romanticism of Rachmaninoff’s unaccountably neglected Symphony No. 3. The pyrotechnics of Rachmaninoff’s crowd-pleasing Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. And between the two, the world premiere of “It” Boy Nico Muhly’s new Concerto Grosso. The components of this subscription program add up to what we may fairly call a true embarrassment of riches. And now factor in the glamorous guest artists. Up the Pacific coast, the Seoul native Eun Sun Kim is making waves as music director of the San Francisco Opera, but her portfolio as a top international symphony conductor is burgeoning, too. And to grace the grand finale of the Paganini Variations, there’s the 27-year-old pianist Alexandre Kantorow, winner of the first prize, gold medal, and Grand Prix at the 16th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2019, and of the Gilmore Artist Award in 2023. Unlike the Tchaikovsky, the Gilmore descends on an unsuspecting recipient by action of an anonymous panel of international scouts. Rather than the sheer bravura that tends to win competitions, their criteria favor individuality and poetic imagination. —Matthew Gurewitsch
