In 1973, the guitarist Pete Townshend wrote Quadrophenia for his band, The Who. The album was a smash, selling millions of copies and inspiring a film of the same name six years later. The music has now inspired a fusion of rock music and classical dance—a production choreographed by the late Paul Roberts and directed by Rob Ashford. “The themes of young people growing up in difficult times are still so relevant,” says Townshend, whose songs have been reimagined as an orchestral score recorded by Britain’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. “It’s going to be poignant, tender and poetic and epic.” Following a U.K. tour, the show now comes to New York.
