The plan was to celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2022, but when the Omicron variant surged, Prototype postponed. This January, its aluminum anniversary—symbolizing strength and resilience—goes forward. The presentations of the Prototype Festival add up to seven: five world premieres, an East Coast premiere, and an animated opera. This is opera-theater and music-theater composed or created by noted contemporary talents, including Emma O’Halloran, Gelsey Bell, Du Yun, Daniel Bernard Roumain, Silvana Estrada, and David Lang. Undine, the animated opera, is by Stefanie Janssen and Michaël Brijs. “Essential to the evolution of American opera,” The New Yorker has said of Prototype.
