The enigmatic Yaw Atta-Owusu, who performs as Ata Kak, got his start in his native Ghana in the 1990s, making music tinged with aspects of dancehall, highlife, and reggae. Oba Simaa, a tape he first released in 1994, was rediscovered in 2002 by Brian Shimkowitz, founder of the label Awesome Tapes from Africa. In 2015, Shimkowitz reissued the tape, catapulting Atta-Owusu into instant fame as a cult icon. Atta-Owusu will perform his irresistible left-field rap music at Le Poisson Rouge, presented by Pioneer Works. —Sophie Kemp
