Picture the Dream: The Story of the Civil Rights Movement Through Children's Books

Oct 8 – Nov 8, 2020
1280 Peachtree St NE, Atlanta, GA 30309, United States

In 1955, Rosa Parks refused to surrender her seat while riding on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. In 1960, Ruby Bridges walked into a segregated elementary school in New Orleans, head held high. That same year, four Black students began what became a monumental sit-in at a Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina. These tales of bravery, and many more, as pictured by established children’s book authors and emerging artists, are the subject of this exhibition. The resulting images are rendered with a light touch that bridges art and storytelling. —E.C.
