There have always been two schools of thought when it comes to photography. While some photographers mercilessly document the world around them, others use the medium for storytelling and the suspension of disbelief. This exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria brings together 200 major works from its collection. There are photographs by Hank Willis Thomas, Dora Maar, Zanele Muholi, Gordon Parks, Nan Goldin, and many others. The images trace the course of the medium through the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. —Elena Clavarino
