Peter Weber: Structure and Change

Peter Weber, Streifendurchdringung FOR10, 2013.

May 22 – Sept 18, 2022
Alfred-Ritter-Straße 27, 71111 Waldenbuch, Germany

“The material I fold transforms from a one-dimensional flat structure to an architectural three-dimensional object which slides back to a flat relief,” explains the German artist Peter Weber. “It is the thought of wholeness which fascinates me.” Weber started out as a painter, but then became fascinated by the mathematical game of folding—one piece of material, no cuts—as his sole means of artistic expression. Weber folds many different materials—paper, cotton, plastic, steel, felt—and the final work can be hard-edged or look pillowy soft. The pieces are also fathomless, in the sense that you can’t see how they were made. Precise calculations go into each construction, and Weber begins with paper samples. This exhibition follows Weber’s career from his student days in the 1970s to his most recent works. —Elena Clavarino
