In 1950, when Peter Hujar was 16, he left his abusive home to live alone in Manhattan. Hujar took an apprenticeship with a commercial photographer, and though he found the job stifling, he stuck with it to pay the bills. Finally, in 1967, he was able to quit that work and pursue photography as an art form. His black-and-white portraits of queer life in the 1970s and 80s—from the Stonewall Riots to underground drag clubs to bodies ravaged by AIDS—came to define an era. This exhibition is curated by Elton John, a longtime fan of Hujar’s work. He has selected 50 photographs for display and a portion of the proceeds will go to John’s AIDS Foundation. —Jensen Davis
