Of Vermont’s 626,299 people, 1.4 percent are black. This play, set against the ultra-white landscape of the Green Mountain State, throws its black protagonist, Emmie, into sharp relief. Named for the town in which Emmie works, Paris explores the strangely ironic relationship between visibility and invisibility: the more Emmie is noticed by others, the more alienated she is. The playwriting debut of Eboni Booth, an award-winning actress, Paris look at what it means to be seen through social contrasts, economic constraints, and working conditions. —C.J.F.
