The artist Outi Pieski roots her work in her Sámi heritage. A historically nomadic people, the Sámi still populate the region of Sápmi, which today covers the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia’s Kola Peninsula. Pieski incorporates traditional Sami crafts—Duodji—into her art, not only to honor her heritage but to reverse some of its erasure by colonial forces. An artist as much as an activist, Pieski addresses the topics of Indigenous peoples’ rights and ancestral return. “It’s a force we need,” the critic Jonathan Jones recently wrote in The Guardian, adding that Pieski’s art “can make you feel one with its mountains and seas, its peoples and spirits.” —Jeanne Malle
