“My endeavor is twofold,” said the artist Otto Piene in 1965, “to demonstrate that light is a source of life which has to be constantly rediscovered, and to show expansion as a phenomenal event. Everything is striving for larger space.” Air, heat, color, the ineffable and the intense—all are at play in the work of Piene, who co-founded the legendary postwar group ZERO (meaning “beginning”). This exhibition focuses on the fire pictures and includes 13 paintings—searing red canvases, perforated by smoke and flaring with energy. —E.C.
