In this six-part documentary, director Larissa Bills tracks a number of students through a year at the School of American Ballet, an institution founded by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein in 1934. Today, SAB is an eminent classical-dance academy. Every year a handful of graduates go straight into the New York City Ballet; others go to companies around the world. Those that don’t make a career of dance put their balletic discipline and drive into ambitions outside the theater. In her documentary, Billis has allowed the students themselves to narrate the action, and because The Nutcracker is an annual December event, she follows them through rehearsals of that ballet. The coronavirus rears its head in the sixth episode, where we see the dedication of these young dancers continuing on Zoom. All six episodes are now streaming. —L.J.
