On Broadway

Streaming on Kino Marquee

After 17 months of dimmed lights and locked doors, it’s easy to assume that Broadway never had it this bad. Oren Jacoby’s documentary On Broadway seeks to assure viewers that indeed it has. Alec Baldwin, Christine Baranski, Hugh Jackman, Helen Mirren, the late sages Hal Prince and August Wilson, and other theater mainstays recall a time in the 1970s and 80s when Broadway was on the verge of bankruptcy, victim of a general economic downturn followed by the AIDS epidemic. There was talk of tearing down theaters and replacing them with … parking lots. Broadway managed to reinvent itself and come roaring back. We expect nothing less this time around. —J.V.
