As Alex Ross, the music critic of The New Yorker, has put it, “The Ojai Music Festival has been raising a finely calibrated ruckus each spring since 1947.” It’s true that between the natural beauty of the location and the revolving door for artistic directors (there’s a new one each year), the formula never grows old. This year, the collaborative collective AMOC—which stands for American Modern Opera Company—rules the roost with its usual flair for interdisciplinary experimentation. The all-highlights program includes Family Dinner (new mini-concertos by Matthew Aucoin), the echoing of tenses (a new song cycle by Anthony Cheung, set to verse written by Asian-American poets), and a theatrical presentation of Olivier Messiaen’s exotic song cycle Harawi (sung by Julia Bullock, with direction by Zack Winokur). Finely calibrated? I guess. A ruckus? Let’s see. —Matthew Gurewitsch
