The French may never forgive Richard Linklater for having made the best film of the nouvelle vague. His newest film of the same name is a black-and-white, 35-mm., 1960 French movie made today with a digital camera by a Texan who doesn’t speak French. A brisk, lighthearted masterpiece that sparkles with energy, with verve and appetite and conviction, it’s about the making of the movie that set the tone for the next 50 years of film.
