The French may never forgive Richard Linklater for having made the best film of the nouvelle vague. His newest film of the same name is a black-and-white, 35-mm., 1960 French movie made today with a digital camera by a Texan who doesn’t speak French. A brisk, lighthearted masterpiece that sparkles with energy, with verve and appetite and conviction, it’s about the making of the movie that set the tone for the next 50 years of film. Zoey Deutch and newcomer Aubry Dullin star in the film that recounts the shooting of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless. —Joan Juliet Buck
