Nicolas Party’s candy-colored art may remind viewers of computer-generated objects in a virtual space. Working most often in pastel, Party plays with color and form, allowing surreal worlds to spring up like mutant mirages. In this exhibition, Party looks to Louis-Léopold Boilly (1761–1845)—painter, engraver, and miniaturist—taking particular inspiration from his caricatures and crowd scenes. Along the gallery’s walls, Party’s crowds loom large in black and white, full of many emotions. Throughout the gallery space, sculptures of deep-hued heads in assorted sizes, eyes staring, are fixtures in an alternate universe. —E.C.
