Nan Goldin: The Other Side

Sept 4 – Oct 4, 2020
Bjørn Farmanns gate 4, 0271 Oslo, Norway

“My desire is to preserve the sense of people’s lives,” the renowned photographer Nan Goldin has said, “to endow them with the strength and beauty I see in them. I want the people in my pictures to stare back.” And stare back they certainly do. Goldin has become world famous for her candid, deeply personal portraits. In the beginning she wanted to capture the people she loved—a way of holding them close—but as she got older she started photographing strangers, following in the footsteps of fashion photographers Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin. On display in this exhibition are works from the early 1990s, when Goldin traveled from Bangkok to Paris to Chicago, snapping photos of the souls she met along the way. —E.C.
