In 2022, while on a flight from New York to Los Angeles, the aspiring actress Sophia Maddox felt ill. Like everyone at the time, she’d taken a COVID test, but one thing had led to another and along the way she’d received startling news: her grandfather was Charles Manson, the murderous embodiment of the helter-skelter 60s. A new documentary chronicles Maddox’s journey of self-discovery in the wake of such news, and examines as well Manson’s infamous mythologized past. Interviews pull from those closest to him: Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme and Dianne Lake, who at 14 was the youngest of Manson’s “family.” Maddox became close with Michael Brunner, one of Manson’s sons, and estranged from her actual father, who took the discovery as a curse. Amid such emotional strife, Maddox holds no regrets for such an investigation. “The biggest gift I gave myself was finding my family’s truth, not just inheriting the sensational ones,” she told PEOPLE. —Maggie Turner
