Good or bad, present or absent, involved or uninvolved—when it comes to mothers, everyone has one. In an exhibition that explores representations of motherhood over the last century, artists from the early avant-garde to the present day—Egon Schiele, Alberto Giacometti, Louise Bourgeois, Niki de Saint Phalle, Tracey Emin, and more—are brought together to examine a role that is pressured by expectations historical, political, cultural, and spiritual. —E.C.
