When one thinks of the Italian Novecento, the first names that come to mind are Giorgio Morandi, Giorgio de Chirico, Felice Casorati, Gino Severini, and Giacomo Balla. Why? It all started in 1926, when curator Margherita Sarfatti organized a landmark exhibition “Prima Mostra del Novecento Italiano” (First Exhibition of the Italian 20th Century), in which she offered a simple vision for a tired, war-ravaged world. Sarfatti united these artists under the three themes that came to define the movement: still life, landscapes, and representations of women. This U.K. exhibition replicates Sarfatti’s. —E.C.
