Claude Monet, Antibes, 1888.

10 Av. Princesse Grace, 98000 Monaco

In 1883, when Claude Monet was 43, he made the dramatic move to Giverny, a quaint village in Normandy. The town was far from the railway lines and home to only 279 inhabitants. While wandering there, Monet spotted an abandoned farm in “Pressoir,” a place where cider had once been made. He convinced the winegrower Louis-Joseph Singeot to lease him the building, and moved in a few days later. It was around this time that Monet first traveled to Monte Carlo and the Riviera with his friend Pierre-Auguste Renoir. He began complementing his palette of northern colors with the warmer hues of the South, heading toward his mature style. At the Grimaldi Forum, 100 paintings created during Monet’s jaunts to the Riviera, from 1883 to 1888, are on view. —Elena Clavarino
