Back in the 1960s and early 70s, the collector Abby Weed Grey traveled across Iran, India, and Turkey looking for prints, drawings, paintings, and sculptures. Her husband had died in 1956, and four years into widowhood she began her adventures. Over her travels, Grey came to believe in the idea of “one world through art.” She said, “I didn’t know where to look or exactly what to look for, but whatever it was going to be, it had to express the response of a contemporary sensibility to contemporary circumstances.” Art that answered her agenda is housed at N.Y.U.’s Grey Art Gallery, named for Abby. In this exhibition, selected works from that collection are on view. Artists on the roster include Parviz Tanavoli, Fahrelnissa Zeid, and M. F. Husain. —E.C.
