In between the jagged rocks of Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains, not far from his hometown, Matthew Barney envisioned his own American myth. He embodied his narrative in three mediums—film, sculpture, and engravings. In the film, titled Redoubt, an ethereal figure inspired by Diana the Huntress (both protector and predator) is portrayed by a dancer. The accompanying sculptures are Idaho incarnate—vestiges of harvested trees bathed in molten metal. Barney brings pieces of Idaho to his first solo show in China. —E.C.
