If you know fashion, you likely know the work of Mario Testino. Since moving from Lima, Peru, to London, in 1976, he has photographed everyone, for just about every magazine, and done it with poise and power. Terence Pepper, the National Portrait Gallery’s curator of photography, has called Testino “the John Singer Sargent of our time.” Over the last seven years, the photographer has pivoted from fashion, instead traveling to 30 countries where he’s made portraits of indigenous populations. This exhibition in Rome presents Testino’s vibrant studies of these cultures, many of them undeniably stylish. —Elena Clavarino
