Marie Triepcke met Peder Severin Krøyer, one of Denmark’s most successful artists, in Paris at the Café de la Régence, a hotspot for the Scandinavians known as the Skagen Painters. They married the following year, in 1889, and she took his name. Though Marie had painted since girlhood, marriage diminished her ambitions. She sat often for Krøyer when she might herself have been painting. “I sometimes think that the whole effort is in vain, we have far too much to overcome,” she said. “What significance does it really have if I paint? I shall never, never achieve anything really great.” Nevertheless, inspired by the Scottish designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh, she began designing furniture. This major exhibition presents Marie Krøyer’s art, furniture, and design, proving wrong her assessment of her achievements. —Elena Clavarino
