Mariana Castillo Deball: Replaying Life's Tape

Oct 5 – Dec 7, 2019
Building F, Monash University, Caulfield campus, 900 Princes Hwy Service Rd, Caulfield East VIC 3145, Australia

“Replaying Life’s Tape” doesn’t refer to sentimental moments or monologues seeking closure. Mariana Castillo Deball’s first Australian exhibition instead contemplates evolutionary history. The artist conceived her approach when she visited South Australia’s Ediacara Hills, where fossils of a new archaeological age were discovered in 1946. Traversing the rocky terrain, Castillo Deball envisioned creatures 600 million years old—the multicellular organisms that inhabited murky seafloors. What did they look like? In sculptures, installations, drawings, and prints, Castillo Deball imagines a world before the coming of complex forms of life. —E.C.
