While digging through the archives of her 50-year photographic career, Wales-born Marian Delyth felt as though she were unearthing “fragments of a lifetime of chasing the light”—a reference to William Henry Fox Talbot’s notion of “painting with light.” These fragments present life in Wales between the 1970s and today, with a particular focus on moments of public activism. Delyth was on hand for the anti-apartheid rallies in the 80s, photographing Welsh singer Dafydd Iwan as he performed for a crowd in Cardiff. More recently, Delyth documented the Aberystwyth Clean Water protest in 2024, which saw swimmers and surfers out in the water with cardboard signs. A new solo exhibition at Ffotogallery shows a selection of Delyth’s photojournalism from the past 50 years.
