Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs in Marc by Sofia.

It’s not every day that we get an honest peek inside a popular figure’s life and mind, especially in this hyper-careful age of TikTok interviews and press-fueled profiles. Marc by Sofia, a new documentary about Marc Jacobs directed by Sofia Coppola, promises the opposite. The pair, who have been friends and collaborators for over 30 years, came together to offer an intimate and candid view into the American designer’s life. “The documentary starts off rather slowly but gets moving when it dials back to the early 1990s,” Matthew Carey writes in Deadline. How fun. Though some dark parts of Jacobs’s life are not addressed (cocaine and alcohol habits, which led him to rehab twice in 10 years, according to The New Yorker), anecdotes about his childhood, his quick rise to fame, and the years that followed relate a life of triumph. —Jeanne Malle
