In the U.S., the 1960s and 70s were formative decades. There was the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, and the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy. Lesser known are the era’s American Indian activists, Brown Berets, and the early voices calling for gay rights. An exhibition that showcases female, queer, indigenous, and African American artists, “Mapping the Collection” traces the history of those who were on the fringes of the U.S. art scene. Work by the likes of David Wo­j­narow­icz, Leon Polk Smith, and many others will find context in an exhibition that places them alongside Andy Warhol, Roy Licht­en­stein, Do­n­ald Judd, Robert Smith­son, and Robert In­dia­na. —E.C.
