Of the four sons of Johann Sebastian Bach who followed in his footsteps as composers, Carl Philipp Emanuel stands out as the most distinguished. Straddling the Baroque and the nascent classical styles, CPE helped shape the musical language that Mozart was to inherit. Among his other achievements, Carl Philipp Emanuel composed—in advance of Boccherini and Haydn—a trio of cello concertos that are full of surprises. Mark Kosower, principal cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra, assays the the third in the series, in A major, under the baton of Franz Welser-Möst. Shostakovich and Messaien complete the bill. —M.G.
