How do you use technology to explore religion? The young artist LuYang began pondering that question at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, when they studied under the Chinese video artist Zhang Peili. Merging video games, anime, and science fiction, LuYang uses seemingly superficial subject matter to delve into spirituality as well as mental illness and death. Last year, they presented a non-binary, post-human avatar called “DOKU” at the Venice Biennale, a nod to the phrase “Dokusho Dokushi,” which means “we are born alone and we die alone.” This is the artist’s first solo show in Switzerland. —Elena Clavarino
